The Poinsettia is indigenous to Mexico. It was brought to North
America in 1828 by Joel
Robert Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

Legends say the flower was originally white, symbolizing the purity of CHRIST. After HIS crucifixion, the flower turned blood red. Other names are Star of Bethlehem and in Mexico it is called Flower of the Holy Night.

The bright red petals are in fact leaves with the tiny green and yellow center being the actual bloom.

"When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east; went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."

Matthew 2:9-10
