Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

I have had a few questions about identity of butterflies so I will begin posting them along so you will know them when you see them. I already have quite a few in my garden and there are plenty of wildflowers blooming for them now.

This is the Gulf Fritillary, a member of the Longwing family, having the longer forewings. It is easy to identify by its bright red-orange color. Looking at the side view, notice there is an black outline of an eye on the hindwing. These appear in early spring but are most prominent in fall. They feed frantically in fall and migrate to the Caribbean Islands for the winter. They enjoy a wide variety of flowers, Lantana is a favorite and in fall they feed on the Gayfeathers.

"The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD GOD of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust."
Ruth 2:12
