Member of Mallow Family
Blooms: February - July
This plant is sprawling and can reach up to 3 ft. tall.
It's beautiful color and shape give it it's name.
It grows in poor, sandy soils in almost all parts of Texas. It is not very common in North East Texas , but I have found a few.
Winecup is also known as Poppy Mallow and is pollinated mainly be bees looking for pollen and nectar. Many Native American tribes used it for several medicinal purposes. Some burned the roots and inhaled the smoldering vapors for treatment for colds. Others used it a food source. This plants European relative known as the Marsh Mallow is used for it's sticky sap from it's roots in the making of confectionary marshmallows.
Likewise also a cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new testament in MY blood, which is shed for you,"
Luke 22:20-21
