Red Gaillardia

Member of Gaillardia Family
Blooms: April - July
On my trip to Austin I came across fields of these beautiful flowers. They were scattered along the roadsides with many other wildflowers. These Gaillairdias tend to be endemic and form large masses of flowers. They grow in poor, dry soils of old fields, pastures, prairies and woodland openings. They are found only in South Central and Southern Texas.
They are a relative of the Indian Blanket or Firewheel.
They have a very pretty color and will bloom sporadically into the fall. They can be easily grown in gardens if seeds are planted in the fall. They were named after a French botanist , Gaillard de Charentonneau, who studied native flowers in the 18th century.
