The beautiful larkspurs are in full bloom now and are everywhere in our area of northeast Texas. I love their beautiful colors. This is one of the bluest of the wildflowers. Depending on soil content, their color can range from white to pink, shades of lavender and this beautiful azure blue. They are a member of the Ranunculacea family and bloom from April through July.
Larkspurs are often found growing in large numbers and can reach 1-3 ft. in height. The beautiful flowers, about 1", grow on a long spike stem. The flower has a spur at the back, which gives it its name. They grow from tubers and are very hard to transplant.
"Larkspur" is an old English name referring to its resemblance of the flower spur to the long claw-like spur of the Crested Larkspur.
These plants are very toxic, containing alkaloids and are classified as deadly. Livestock will not graze them even in the dry times when no grass is available. For many years the seeds of this plant were used in the treatment of head lice. Later it was banned due to its toxicity as some deaths were reported from its use.
Time and time again we learn of all the uses of our beautiful wildflowers, some helpful and healing, yet some deadly. It is a great mystery that we do not understand as to how Native Americans used these plants for so many healing qualities when parts were so deadly.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know unto GOD. And the peace of GOD, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through CHRIST JESUS.
