Snow-on-the-Prairie (Euphorbia bicolor)
..
A friend from Austin sent these pictures to inquire what it's name was. They are so beautiful! Thank you, Merry. Another name is Snow-on-the-Mountain.
This plant is a member of the Spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and blooms July through November. I have not found this plant in northeast Texas, wish I could because it is beautiful. The green and white leaves with tiny white flowers in center of leaf cluster appear as snow across the fields. They can reach up to 4 feet in height. Each cluster of flowers has only one female flower (pistillate), all others are male.
These plant are known to have caustic qualities. They are very irritating to the skin and eyes, caused from the plant's milky sap.
"Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave of those which have sinned."
