Bagpod

Member of Legume (Bean) familyBlooms: August - October
I found this today for first time. I went home from church on a back country dirt road and these beautiful plants were all along the roadsides.

Bagpod gets its name from its bean pod which when mature has 2 large beans inside. It grows along woodlands edges and road sides and loves moist soils and lots of sun. It is classified as an annual. I love the beautiful little orange and red flowers, so beautiful. Bagpods grow in large colonies and can reach 8 feet tall. A common name is Bladderpod. Click on the flowers and see how delicate and beautiful they are. The tall plants tend to droop over when they reach full height. The leaves and stems of this plant contain saponins and are poisonous.
Bagpods name is derived originally from the Greek word "glotti", which means tongue, referring to the two seeded pods, if you look closely, the flowers appear to have a "tongue" too.
"The spirit of the LORD spake to me, and HIS word was on my tongue."

II Samuel 23:2
