This beautiful little butterfly is 2 1/4" - 3" across. It can be identified by the red-orange bar across the forewing and the red-orange border on the hindwing. The Red Admiral is most often found in openings in river woods or swamp areas, but adults can wander extensively. This one decided to stop off in my garden for some tasty nectar on my roses. These butterflies are found throughout the United States and in Southern Canada. They overwinter as adults and migrate to the southern states. They feed on animal droppings, flower nectar and saps.
