This is also called "Angel's Trumpet".
Not sure which family is from. I grew this one in a pot on my deck and it got over 5 ft. tall. As you can see, the buds are long and wrapped. As night falls, they begin to open and all at once they pop open. They are so spectacular. I love to sit out late evenings and just watch them unfold and burst open. They have a heavy smell of the Magnolia blossoms. They will produce a burr-like seed pod in the fall and will reseed themselves. They do well in gardens, but like partial shade.
This one grows in Kansas and Nebraska area as a wild-weed known as Jimpson Weed. It has been known to be used for smoking of dried leaves, which gives you a real high, but , too much is fatal. I think I will just sit on the porch and watch them bloom!! One night this one had 15 blooms and the large night moths love to come and gather nectar from down in it's "trumpet".
