Blooms: March - November
The Bull Nettle grows in sandy soils mostly in pastures and open areas in large quantities. It's stems and leaves are covered with "hairy" spines that cause very painful irritation when touched. They have a very beautiful bloom, but once you've "gotten in touch" with one, you will stay away.
Indians used to eat the seeds which were very tasty when ripe. Other common names are "Tread-Softly " and "mala Mujer" which is Spanish for "bad woman".
