Texas Bluebonnet

Member of the Legume Family.
Blooms: March - May.

Texas Bluebonnets do not grow everywhere in Texas, mostly in the Hill Country area. They like gravely, sandy soils and grow in great abundance.

The "Legend of the Texas Bluebonnet" originated in Kingsland, Texas. It has been said that a great drought had plagued the land and the Indians of the area held rituals dancing and chanting to their "Rain God" for the rains to come. They built huge fires and sacraficed their most prized possessions. A small Indian girl placed her handmade doll into the fire to help bring rain. Shortly the skys began to pour rain out upon the land. When the rains stopped and the sun began to shine, bluebonnets popped up abundantly all over the area and burst into beautiful blue blooms. The blue blooms were a symbol of the little girl's tears that were shed from the loss of her doll.
We Texan's are proud to have the Bluebonnet as our state flower.
