Red Root
The Red Root is a perennial herbaceous shrub which blooms April through July. It grows in well drained soils and thrives in the hot, dry Texas summers. Red Root is a member of the Buckthorn family. Another name for this plant is Indian Tea.
This shrub grows to about 3 feet tall and is in a rounded shape with beautiful white clusters of tiny flowers. It has small oval shaped leaves and makes a beautiful shrub. It is grazed by livestock and birds such as quails love its shiny black seeds.
Native Americans used this plant for many medicinal purposes. A decoction of the red roots was used to wash injured legs and feet. Infusions were made for bowel pain and for purifying the blood. The roots were also held in between teeth to ease the pain of toothache.
