Wapato

Member of Water-Plantain
Blooms: May - October
This plant grows in water, mud or muck along edges of streams or lakes and in ditches. Click for closer look at the tiny white 3-petal flowers of this plant. It grows in very large quantities.
The starchy tubers buried beneath the mud were once an important food source for the Indians. They were eaten raw or were stored and later boiled or dried and pounded into a flour used in making bread. These tubers are eaten by various forms of wildlife, especially ducks, giving it it's common name of "Duck Potato".
