Magnolia

Member of Magnoliaceae Family
Blooms : May - Summer
There are about 210 flowering plants in this family. We know the Magnolia as a tree of the Deep South that can become huge and covered with many beautiful white blossoms. They have a heavenly sweet smell, attracting bees and other insects. It's leaves are large , dark green and very shiny, they are so beautiful, they hardly look real.
The genus is named after a French botanist Pierre Magnol. Magnolia is an ancient genus. Fossils of Magnolia blooms have been found dating back 95 million years ago.
Magnolias have long been known and used in China. References to their medicinal qualities go back as far as 1083. It is found in many parts of the world. To me, it's just one of the most beautiful and fragrant blossoms .
"The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing."
Isaiah 35:1-2

i gave daddy a magnolia for father's day in 1971, i think it was. her name was miss maggie (for mississippi magnolia). she was about 5' tall then and is way taller than the one-story house now. he used to cut blooms for me to take to my house. this picture reminds me of him. :)
