Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly

On our ride yesterday, we came upon an open area where timber had been cleared. There were many flowers blooming and these beautiful butterflies seemed to be everywhere.
This is the most common fritillary and so beautiful. They are 3 to 4" across their wings. They love thistles and milkweeds. You have to click on him to see just how beautiful the design and color is. They can be found from mid June through August and then they migrate to the gulf and Caribbean areas for the winter. They can be seen by the thousands as they fly over the gulf waters to their winter home. Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of the Wood Violets.
"Sing unto the LORD a new song, and HIS praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof."
Isaiah 42:10
