Common Sunflower

Member of Aster Family
Blooms: Early Summer - Fall
This plant can grow up to 10 ft. tall and is the most abundant wildflower found in Texas. It grows well along road banks, fence rows , fields and in heavy sandy soil. It's blooms can be quite large.
This plant was very valuable to the Native Americans because of it's many medicinal uses and it's food source. It's seeds are eaten by several species of wild birds, squirrels love them too. Here, the Cardinal is very fond of it's tasty seeds. Sunflower heads can be dried and seeds heads saved in dry containers and later placed outside for birds to feed on. It is also very valuable for it's modern food products, sunflower seed oils and sunflower seeds, which are very tasty and nutritious.
Sunflowers do great in gardens when planted from seeds and add a great background and beautiful color.
"Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart."
Psalm 97:11
