Sly as a Fox

This red fox came slipping in for a snack last night. We haven't seen him since last year.

The red fox is a mammal of the order Carnivora, native to much of North America. They are nocturnal and are rarely seen in the daylight.

The red fox is most commonly a rusty red, with white underbelly, black ear tips and legs and a bushy tail. The "red" color can vary from dark chesnut to golden. They have long soft hair and in winter have especially thick fur. Red foxes feed on plant material, blackberries, apples, plums and other fruits. They also prey on rodents, such as mice and moles, rabbits, birds, eggs, small reptiles and fish. They stay in pairs when the babies, called "kits" are born and the father catches food and brings to Mother and babies. After they go off on their own at about 8 to 10 months, the mother and father go their seperate ways. An average litter of kits is about 7-8.
Click on the picture for a better look at this one. He was being a bit sneaky and shy of the camera flash.
