This huge white oak tree was partially dead and as you can see the woodpeckers have taken over hiding their seeds and food supply for a later date.
As the wood begins to decay, it becomes soft and birds often store seeds and bugs under the bark and in these holes. Maybe we should learn a lesson from these birds and "lay away" stock for a later date! Nature always seems to know what to do to prepare for changing of the seasons. In the forest, nothing is wasted, everything has it's purpose.
