Sensitive Fern

Member of Onoclea Fern Family
Comes up early spring and lasts until end of Summer.
This fern flourishes in moist and dark places. It is found on creek banks and in wet places along woodlines. It cannot take full sun.
In the fall it puts forth a tall hard brown "stem" that is covered with berry-like seeds. It turns dark brown and these stems will stay even after the fronds have died back in winter.
Sensitive Fern does well in gardens as borders or even in large pots as long as it gets plenty of water and complete shade. I had some in large planter on my deck---they lived for years until they became so root bound that they broke the boxes apart.
