Monarch Butterfly
Butterflies are on a feeding frenzy preparing for their trip to warmer climates for the winter months. Scientists say that the Monarch is vanishing in Texas. The reason: declining numbers of Milkweeds, which is their major food source. This one was on a Milkweed native to North Carolina which I started from seeds . There are several types of Milkweeds, all are toxic, causing the Butterfly to be toxic if eaten by predators. No one knows why these beautiful plants are disappearing, but I intend to plant lots of them in the spring. Seeds come from an okra shaped pod that dries, bursts open, being full of seeds somewhat like dandelions. You can order seeds of many types from Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center @ www.wildflower.org. A great place to identify and learn of our native plants.
