In the United States, Independence Day, commonly know as the Fouth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
John Adams wrote: " the second day of July , 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commenorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to GOD ALMIGHTY. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward and forever more."
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson . The legal seperation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776. It was finally approved by Congress on July 4, 1776.
Let's all fly those flags not just on holidays, but every day of every year to show that we are proud of what our forefathers fought for and men and women are still fighting for today to keep us free. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
