Giant Swallowtail Butterfly

The Giant Swallowtail Butterfly is our largest butterfly. It can be from 4" to 6 1/4" across. It lives in the Southeast and other southern states , where it's caterpillars, sometimes called Orange Dogs or Orange Puppies, can be a nuisance to certain crops, as they eat and completely strip the plant of it's leaves. Look for it on rocky hillsides, piney woods and in gardens.
These butterflies nectar at many flowers, including lantana, thistle and boneset. The adults keep breeding and flying year-round in Florida and Texas. Isn't it beautiful? Click for closer view.
