These plants like dry or moist sandy soils in prairies, pastures, cedar-oak flats and edges of woodlands.
They usually form large colonies and are quite spectacular. They sometimes look like a bright pink ribbon for miles on the roadsides. They are self-seeding and do well in gardens. To plant seeds, early fall place seeds in raked soil and do not cover.
